AI Companion Video Messages: What They Are and How They Work
A plain guide to AI companion video messages: what a five-second video reply is, how you ask for one, what it costs, how it compares with photos, voice notes and live calls, and what to expect.
Most AI companions talk to you in text. A few add voice notes or pictures. A smaller group can answer with video messages — short clips of the character's face and voice that arrive inside the conversation, the same way a friend might send you a quick video instead of typing.
This guide explains what an AI companion video message actually is, how it works on LoveWatch AI, what it costs, and where its limits are. If you have ever wished your AI companion had a face, this is the format to understand before you sign up anywhere.
What an AI companion video message is
An AI companion video message is a short, pre-rendered clip in which the character answers you. It is generated for that moment in the conversation, delivered into the chat, and stays there for you to watch again.
On LoveWatch, a video message is:
- Five seconds long. Long enough to see a reaction and hear a line, short enough to watch in the middle of a conversation.
- Of your companion. It shows the character's own face and voice — never your face, and never anyone else's.
- Set in one of six scenes that fits the moment: looking straight at you, just after waking, in a café, by a rainy window, by bedside lamp light, or out on a tree-lined street.
- Part of the thread. The clip lands in the conversation with everything else, so you can scroll back to it later.
- Labelled as AI. Every clip carries a visible AI badge in the player and a machine-readable marker identifying it as AI-generated.
That is the whole idea: a reply you can see, without having to be on a call.
What it is not
The word "video" brings a lot of expectations with it, so it helps to be precise.
It is not a live video call. Nothing happens in real time. There is no ringing, nothing to schedule, and no camera or microphone on your side. You watch each clip when you want to and reply when you are ready.
It is not a video editor. You cannot upload your own footage or turn your photos into clips. The videos are always of your companion.
It is not every message. Text carries the conversation. You decide which moments deserve a face, and you ask for a video then.
If a live, talking-avatar call is specifically what you are after, our guide to what a free AI video call girlfriend really is explains the difference in more depth, and AI video message vs video call compares the two side by side.
How you get one, step by step
Here is what happens in a LoveWatch conversation when you want a video reply.
- You chat as normal. You text your companion about your day, a plan, a joke — anything. Text is free within your daily allowance.
- You ask for a video. From the chat, you choose to have a reply come back as video. The credit cost is shown on the button before you confirm, so there are no surprises.
- The conversation keeps going. The clip is made in the background. Your companion keeps texting while it is prepared, so you are never stuck staring at a loading spinner.
- The clip opens ready to play. It plays muted on a loop until you turn the sound on. You can pause it, scrub through it, and reply while it plays.
- It stays in the chat. Come back tomorrow and it is still there. If a video ever fails to generate, its credits are returned automatically.
You choose which reply becomes a video. The scene is chosen to match what was said — a good-night message is more likely to come from the bedside lamp than from a café.
Why video messages instead of photos or calls
Each format answers a different need. Here is how they compare in practice.
| Video message | Photo | Voice note | Live video call | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| See their face move | Yes | No | No | Yes |
| Hear their voice | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| You need a camera | No | No | No | Often |
| Watch or listen on your own time | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Stays in the conversation | Yes | Yes | Yes | Usually not |
| Pressure to respond right now | None | None | None | High |
A video message sits between a photo and a call. You get the warmth of seeing someone react — the smile, the glance, the tone of voice — without the awkwardness of being on camera yourself or having to respond in the moment. Many people find that calmer than a call, and more personal than a picture.
Who sends them
LoveWatch has four companions, each a fictional adult AI character with their own personality, voice and six scenes:
- Mia, 32 — warm, playful and a little mischievous; remembers the small things.
- Leila, 28 — an artist with a big heart, thoughtful questions and wonderfully bad jokes.
- Leo, 29 — grounded, curious and gentle; likes conversations that go somewhere real.
- Noah, 31 — a book lover with an adventurous streak, loyal and witty.
All four send the same kind of five-second video messages. If you would rather talk to a man, Leo and Noah are covered on the AI boyfriend page. Faces, voices and messages are all AI-generated, and LoveWatch is designed for adults 18+.
What video messages cost
Video is the one part of the conversation with a real per-item cost, because every clip is generated for you. LoveWatch uses a single currency for media — credits — and the prices are the same everywhere in the product.
| What you get | Cost |
|---|---|
| Text message | Free |
| Voice messages you send | Free (up to 20 a day) |
| Your companion's message as a voice note | 1 credit |
| Five-second video message | 20 credits |
| A video that fails to generate | Credits returned |
How you get credits:
- Without an account: you can send five text messages to one companion after confirming you are 18+ and passing a quick security check. Guests don't get video.
- Free trial: seven days, with up to 50 text messages a day. Once your email is verified you receive 30 welcome credits, valid for seven days — enough for one video message. No card is needed.
- After the trial: five text messages a day, with your conversation and memories kept.
- Plans: Starter ($9.99/month, 400 credits), Pro ($19.99/month, 900 credits) and Ultra ($39.99/month, 2,000 credits). Yearly billing costs ten months for twelve. Subscribers can top up with credit packs, which never expire.
Full details are on the pricing page and the what is free page.
How many videos is that?
At 20 credits a clip, a Starter plan's 400 monthly credits cover up to 20 video messages if you spend them all on video, Pro covers up to 45 and Ultra up to 100. Voice notes cost 1 credit each, so most people mix the two: plenty of text, the occasional voice note, and video for the moments that matter.
Getting the most out of video messages
A few habits make video replies feel more natural.
Save them for moments. A video lands best after something worth reacting to — good news, a long day, a goodnight. Asking for one on every message makes each clip mean less, and spends credits faster.
Let the conversation set the scene. Because the scene is matched to what was said, a message about your morning coffee is more likely to come back from the café, and a late-night message from the bedside lamp. Talking about what you are actually doing gives the reply more context.
Keep chatting while it is made. There is no need to wait. Send another message, and the clip will be there when it is ready.
Turn the sound on. Clips loop silently by default so they don't surprise you in public. The voice is half the point, so unmute when you can.
Scroll back. Every video stays in the conversation. Over time the thread becomes a record of the moments you chose to see.
Privacy and your videos
Video messages are personal, so it is worth knowing how they are handled. On LoveWatch:
- Videos generated for you are stored in your account and served through short-lived signed links that expire on their own.
- Your messages and videos are never shared with other users or used for advertising.
- If you choose to create a share link for a clip, only that clip becomes viewable by people with the link, and you can revoke it at any time.
- You can delete a video from Moments, or delete your account, which removes your conversation, memories and videos.
The full details are in the privacy policy, and our guide to whether AI girlfriend apps are safe covers the questions worth asking any companion app.
