Are AI Girlfriend Apps Safe? 10 Privacy and Safety Questions to Ask

Before you use an AI girlfriend or companion app: ten questions about data, model providers, photos, age checks, AI labels, crisis support and deletion — with LoveWatch AI's own answers, taken from its privacy policy and terms.

AI girlfriend and companion apps ask for something unusual: the kind of conversation you might otherwise have only with a close friend. That makes it reasonable to ask hard questions before you start. Where do my messages go? Who can see them? What happens if I want everything deleted?

This guide gives you ten questions to ask of any AI companion app, explains why each matters, and answers them for LoveWatch AI using what our privacy policy and terms actually say. Use it as a checklist — for us, and for anyone else.

1. Who actually reads my messages?

Every AI companion sends your messages to a language model to write the reply. Very few companies run their own model, so your text usually goes to one or more outside providers. A trustworthy app tells you who they are.

What to look for: named providers, not "trusted partners".

LoveWatch's answer: our privacy policy names them. Your text is routed through OpenRouter to the model that writes the reply — DeepSeek during the free trial, MiniMax on a paid plan. Both are suppliers based in China, and the policy says so plainly so you can decide whether you are comfortable with that. Voice notes and video are generated by named providers too. We send what is needed to produce the reply — not your email address, your name or your billing details.

2. Are my conversations used for advertising or sold?

Some free apps fund themselves with advertising or data sales. Intimate conversation is the last thing you want feeding an ad profile.

What to look for: an explicit "we do not sell your data" and a clear statement about advertising.

LoveWatch's answer: conversations are stored in your account so your history works across devices. They are used to provide the service and are never shared with other users or used for advertising. We do not sell your data to anyone.

3. What do analytics tools see?

Most sites use analytics. The question is whether those tools ever receive what you wrote.

What to look for: a list of analytics services and what they receive.

LoveWatch's answer: the privacy policy lists the three analytics services we use and the fixed list of product events they receive — things like "a page was opened" or "a video was requested". No message, reply, display name, email address or photo is ever sent to them, and that is enforced in code by an allow-list of fields for each event, with a test that fails if it is bypassed.

4. Can I see and delete what it remembers about me?

A companion that remembers you is storing personal facts. You should be able to see them and remove them.

What to look for: a visible memory list with a delete option.

LoveWatch's answer: your companion keeps a short summary of your relationship and a profile of things you have told them. You can view and delete those memories at any time. Only facts you volunteered are saved, each kept with the message it came from. More in an AI girlfriend that remembers you.

5. Can I delete everything, and take a copy?

Deletion should be something you can do yourself, completely, without emailing support and hoping.

What to look for: self-service account deletion that covers messages, media and memories, plus a data export.

LoveWatch's answer: you can delete your account at any time in settings. Deletion removes your account, sessions, uploaded files, conversation history, memories, characters you created and the videos generated for you, along with the stored files behind them. Before that, Download a copy under Security gives you one file with your account details, conversations, memories and share links.

6. Are generated videos and images private?

If an app generates pictures or videos for you, they should not be sitting at a public, guessable address.

What to look for: private media by default, sharing only when you choose it, and a way to revoke a share.

LoveWatch's answer: videos generated for you are reachable only through short-lived signed links — roughly an hour — issued to your session. If you create a share link, only that one video becomes viewable to people with the link, none of your conversation goes with it, and revoking the link stops it working straight away. Shared videos carry a report button, and three reports from three different people take a video down automatically.

7. What happens to photos I upload?

Some apps let you create a character from a photo. That raises consent and privacy questions about the person pictured.

What to look for: checks for real adults and public figures, and prompt deletion of the original photo.

LoveWatch's answer: when custom character creation is available, you must confirm the photo is yours or that you are authorised to use it and that the person is an adult. Photos with no face, more than one face, a face read as a minor, or a public figure are rejected. The photo is restyled into a portrait, only the restyled portrait is ever used for video, and the original photo is deleted within 24 hours or as soon as the character is finished. Custom creation is currently unavailable; the four preset companions are fictional characters and are not based on anyone's photo.

8. Is it honest about being AI — and adults only?

A companion app should never pass its characters off as real people, and it should keep adult products away from minors.

What to look for: clear AI labelling on characters and media, regular reminders, and an age gate.

LoveWatch's answer:

  • Every companion is a fictional adult AI character, and every face, voice and message is generated.
  • Every video carries a visible AI badge in the player and a machine-readable AI marker.
  • The chat reminds you that your companion is not a person at the start of a session and again during long conversations.
  • LoveWatch is designed for adults 18+. Guests confirm their age before their first message, and accounts confirm it at sign-up.

9. What happens if a conversation turns serious?

People sometimes say things to a companion they would not say to anyone else. A responsible app has a plan for that.

What to look for: crisis handling that points to real help, and content rules the app actually enforces.

LoveWatch's answer: every message you send is checked before the model sees it. If a message suggests you might hurt yourself, the playful tone is set aside for that turn and you are shown crisis resources, including a directory of free, confidential helplines in most countries. Sexually explicit requests are declined, and anything sexualising minors is blocked and results in account termination. Replies are checked too, and a reply that breaks the rules is withdrawn and replaced.

A companion is not a therapist or a substitute for people. If you are struggling, please contact someone you trust or a local helpline.

10. How am I billed, and can I stop?

Companion apps are often subscriptions with credits or tokens on top. Safety includes not being surprised by charges.

What to look for: no card for a trial, clear per-item prices, and a trial that does not silently convert into a charge.

LoveWatch's answer: the free trial needs only an email — no card — so nothing can be charged when it ends. Paid plans are sold through a merchant of record whose hosted checkout handles your card; card details never touch our servers. Every media item has a fixed price shown before you confirm: 1 credit for a voice note and 20 for a five-second video, with failed videos refunded in credits. Plans start at $9.99/month; see pricing and what is free.

So, are AI girlfriend apps safe?

They can be — but "safe" depends on the specific app, and the only way to know is to read what it commits to in writing. The questions above take ten minutes to check against any privacy policy. If an app will not answer them, that is an answer in itself.

For LoveWatch, everything above comes from our published privacy policy and terms. If any of it changes, those pages change first.
