How to Choose an AI Video Chat App: 9 Questions to Ask First

Thinking about an AI video chat or AI video call app? Nine questions that separate live avatar calls from video replies, reveal the real price of video, and protect your privacy — with LoveWatch AI's honest answers.

Search for "AI video chat" and you will find very different products sitting side by side: talking-avatar calls, apps that summarise YouTube videos, companion apps that send pictures, and companions that reply with short videos. They all use the same words and they do completely different things.

This guide gives you nine questions to ask before you download, sign up or pay for any AI video chat app. For each one we explain why it matters and give LoveWatch AI's own answer, so you can see what a straight answer looks like — and hold other apps to the same standard.

1. Is it a live call, or video replies?

This is the question that matters most, and the one most product pages blur.

  • Live avatar calls put a talking face on screen that answers you as you speak. They feel like a phone call: you need to be available, usually with your microphone on and sometimes your camera.
  • Video replies are short clips the character sends into a text conversation. You watch them whenever you like, and reply in your own time.
  • "Chat about a video" tools let you paste a link and ask an AI questions about the video's content. They are research tools, not companions.

None of these is better in the abstract. They suit different people. If you want to talk out loud in the moment, you want a live call. If you want a companion whose replies you can see, without being on camera, you want video replies.

LoveWatch's answer: video replies. A companion texts with you, and when you ask, replies with a five-second clip of their face and voice. It is not a live video call — there is no calling, no camera on your side and nothing to schedule. Read AI video message vs video call for a deeper comparison.

2. Whose face is in the video?

Some apps animate a character the company designed. Some let you upload a photo. Some generate a new face each time. It is worth knowing which, because it affects both consistency and consent.

A good companion app keeps the same character looking like the same person every time, and is clear about where any face came from.

LoveWatch's answer: every video shows your companion — one of four fictional adult AI characters, Mia, Leila, Leo and Noah — and only them. Clips are never made from your photos and never show you. Every clip carries a visible AI badge.

3. How much does one video actually cost?

Video is expensive to generate, so almost every app charges for it somehow: tokens, gems, coins, credits, or a cap hidden in the plan. The monthly price on the plan page rarely tells you how many videos you get.

Work out the price per clip. Ask: how many units does one video use, how many units does a plan include, and do unused units expire?

LoveWatch's answer:

Cost
Text messageFree
Your companion's message as a voice note1 credit
Five-second video reply20 credits
A video that fails to generateCredits returned

Plans include 400 (Starter, $9.99/month), 900 (Pro, $19.99/month) or 2,000 (Ultra, $39.99/month) credits a month — up to 20, 45 or 100 videos if you spend everything on video. The cost of each video is shown on the button before you confirm. Full details are on the pricing page.

4. What is genuinely free?

"Free" can mean a free account with nothing useful in it, a trial that converts to a charge, or a real free tier. Before you sign up, find out:

  • Do you need a card to start?
  • Does the trial turn into a paid plan automatically?
  • What can you still do when the trial ends?

LoveWatch's answer:

  • No account: five text messages to one companion after confirming you are 18+ and passing a quick security check.
  • Trial: seven days with an email and no card. Up to 50 text messages a day, and 30 welcome credits once your email is verified — enough for one video.
  • After the trial: five text messages a day, with your conversation and memories kept. Nothing is charged, because no card was ever asked for.

The full breakdown is on what is free.

5. Do you need to be on camera?

Many people are drawn to AI video chat because they want company without the pressure of being seen. Others are fine with a camera. Either way, you should know in advance whether an app expects one.

Live call apps often ask for camera and microphone permissions. Some only need the microphone. Video reply apps typically need neither.

LoveWatch's answer: no camera, ever. You type, or record a short voice message if you prefer, and your companion replies. Sending voice messages is free, up to 20 a day.

6. Does it remember you?

A companion that forgets everything between sessions quickly feels like a stranger. Memory is what makes the conversation feel continuous — but it also means the app is storing things about you, so you should be able to see and control it.

Ask: what does it remember, can you see it, and can you delete it?

LoveWatch's answer: saved details help your companion refer back to your plans, preferences and past conversations. You can view and delete those memories at any time. AI can still misremember, so it is helpful rather than perfect recall. Our guide to an AI girlfriend that remembers you explains how this works.

7. Where does your conversation go?

Every AI chat app sends your messages to a model that writes the reply — often a third-party model provider. A trustworthy app names those providers in its privacy policy, says whether your messages are used for advertising, and tells you how to delete everything.

LoveWatch's answer: the privacy policy names the providers that write replies and generate voice and video, and the countries they are in. Messages are never shared with other users or used for advertising, we do not sell your data, and deleting your account removes your conversation, memories and videos. You can also download a copy of your data from settings.

8. Is it honest about being AI?

A good AI companion app never pretends its characters are real people, labels generated media clearly, and keeps adult-only products behind an age check.

LoveWatch's answer: every companion is a fictional adult AI character. Faces, voices and messages are generated, every video carries an AI badge and an embedded AI marker, and the service is designed for adults 18+ — guests confirm their age before their first message.

9. Can you try it before you commit?

The fastest way to judge an AI video chat app is to talk to it. Look for an app that lets you have a real conversation before asking for payment details — and ideally before asking for an email at all.

LoveWatch's answer: you can say hello with no account — five messages to the companion of your choice. If you like it, the conversation comes with you when you sign up.

What is free?No card to start, and something left when the trial ends

Which kind of app is right for you?

  • Choose a live avatar call app if speaking out loud in the moment matters most and you are comfortable with a microphone (and possibly a camera).
  • Choose a "chat with a video" tool if you want to ask questions about YouTube videos or lectures. It is not a companion.
  • Choose a video reply companion like LoveWatch if you want an ongoing conversation with a character whose replies you can see and hear, on your own time, with no camera and a clear price per video.
